City Attorney

The City Attorney provides legal counsel and representation to the City Council, City Manager, departments of the City government and City-appointed boards and commissions. The City Attorney is appointed by and reports to the City Council. The City Attorney's office provides legal advice at Council meetings, performs legal research and offers advisory opinions and responds to requests from Council and City staff to draft or review contracts, ordinances and other legal documents. The office represents the City in litigation and provides assistance in the selection of outside legal counsel when necessary. The Police Attorney also provides legal advice and interpretation to the City Police Department, and advises and instructs officers on ever-changing laws and court rulings.

City Manager


The City of Gastonia operates under the Council-Manager form of government in which a professionally trained City Manager is appointed by the Mayor and City Council to serve as the Chief Administrative Officer for city government. The City Manager manages the day-to-day operations of the overall municipal organization. Based upon adopted ordinances, policies, and budgets by the elected Mayor and City Council, the City Manager is responsible for providing the effective management, supervision, and leadership to city staff necessary for the cost effective delivery of public services. Fire

The Gastonia Fire Department is a highly trainined municipaliity fire department that is proud to serve the citizens of Gastonia, North Carolina. The departments mission is to "Save lives and property, and to protect the citizens and visitors of the City of Gastonia." This is accomplished through training, dedication, and a committement to service. In 2013 our department ran 9,339 calls. We strive to meet the benchmark set by the Center for Fire Accredidation International which recommends that a department respond to 90% of fire calls within 7 minutes and 20 seconds or less. Police


The Police Department is a highly-trained, professional law enforcement organization, and the second largest urban police department in the metropolitan area serving more than 72,000 citizens. The department's mission is to "Protect, Serve, and Enhance the Quality of Life for All." To accomplish the mission, the department has a strong emphasis on community policing and problem-solving efforts. Various partnerships are formed, as needed, to help prevent or address crime trends. Solid Waste

The Solid Waste Division is devoted to planning, developing and operating a sustainable system of solid waste disposal which reduces the impact on our natural resources and promotes an ongoing dedication to customer satisfaction. The following is a list of services provided by our Division:
1. Collect residential garbage placed in the green roll out containers
2. Collect yard waste placed at curb or in containers
3. Collect loose leaves placed at curb during the season

The following are services available for a fee:
1. Collect excess household trash placed at curb
2. Collect tires on or off rims

Streets & Traffic

There are more than 330 miles of City streets and 100 miles of State-maintained streets within the City limits. The City's street maintenance crews are responsible for sweeping, flushing, and resurfacing streets, as well as repairing concrete curb, gutter sidewalks, and potholes. Periodically, the City, in conjunction with a street surveying consultant, rates every street in the city on a scale of 1-100 (100 being the best condition). This guide is used to determine which streets are in need of resurfacing. The City's Traffic Operations Division maintains and oversees the operation of more than 140 computerized traffic signal intersections, approximately 1,000 traffic signal heads, 250 miles of pavement markings, and 17,000 traffic signs. Water / Sewer

Gastonia has served as a regional provider of wholesale water and wastewater services to surrounding municipalities for more than two decades. In 2011, the merger of Gastonia's and the Town of Cramerton's water and wastewater systems initiated the formation of a formal regional utility, named Two Rivers Utilities. Two Rivers Utilities provides water and wastewater services to residents of Gastonia, Bessemer City, Cramerton, Kings Mountain, Lowell, McAdenville, Ranlo and Clover, S.C. The water treatment facility processes about 5 billion gallons of water per year. There are three wastewater treatment facilities – Long Creek, Crowders Creek, and Eagle Rd. All of TRU facilities have received the designation as an Environmental Steward from the state of North Carolina.
